Extending the amenity and resilience benefits Starr Whitehouse created at Southwest Resiliency Park in Hoboken, Southwest Park Expansion integrates a wide range of community programming and stormwater management into a 0.8- acre urban footprint. Public visioning sessions set every component of the park’s program, including pickleball courts, a basketball court, a playground, a splash pad, bathrooms, seating, shade structures, and bike racks. Green infrastructure features such as rain gardens, permeable sidewalks and pavers, and right-of-way bioswales alleviate flooding from on site and nearby. Below the surface, the park’s subterranean detention chambers capture 260,000 gallons of stormwater for controlled release into the sewer. Framed by native trees, shrubs and perennial plantings, the park supports local habitat and provides a shady respite in this formerly industrial neighborhood.
