In the City of Alpharetta, Starr Whitehouse is collaborating with Columbia Engineering to revitalize the 1.4-mile corridor of North Point Parkway. A once-thriving arterial connector providing direct access to North Point Mall, North Point Parkway experienced relative disinvestment in recent years as anchor mall tenants closed and highly-walkable urbanism emerged nearby at Avalon and Downtown Alpharetta. In 2008 the City of Alpharetta anticipated this shift and undertook a Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) with the North Fulton Community Improvement District and the Atlanta Regional Commission. The current Comprehensive Plan acknowledges “The fabric of that corridor reflects an auto-centric retail development pattern that may no longer possess the market appeal that it did earlier in its life cycle.” Building on the City Council’s direction, the Columbia/Starr Whitehouse team’s current directive is to study 2 road diet alternatives, re-greening the corridor while adding a multi-use trail, pedestrian and bike plazas, and extensive green infrastructure interventions in the reclaimed space. The corridor will ultimately connect Big Creek Greenway, the Alpha Loop Trail, and several public parks.
