This concept plan seeks to reimagine Rutgers Gardens as a leading public garden in New Jersey. Currently, Rutgers Gardens is an inaccessible space underutilized by the University community: its students, faculty, and neighbors. As a portal to the New Brunswick campus, Starr Whitehouse’s design enlivens the Gardens with new community space and event areas. The proposed Gardens plan interweaves the story of plant evolution with the story of New Jersey ecology across the diverse topography of the site. From algae to oaks, and meadow to riparian forest, the redesign displays Rutgers’s agricultural and ecological research and creates a beautiful educational and recreational destination for the Rutgers community and the general public to enjoy.
