The new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Fisher Building is a modern and flexible performing arts space, seamlessly integrated into the BAM cultural arts complex. In collaboration with H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture and Convert, Starr Whitehouse designed a rooftop landscape to crown this new building, offering an outdoor venue for community gathering, special events/fundraisers, and educational endeavors. Semi-intensive gardens feature sedums, grasses, woodland shrubs, and perennial plantings. A 16” vine planter covers the bulkheads and spans between them creating a sheltered area on the terrace below. Opaque glass paver lights create an intimate atmosphere at night and illuminate the gardens in a gentle glow. The pre-cast concrete paving and plantings of the Rooftop Landscape contribute to achieving LEED-Silver rating or higher.
