Starr Whitehouse has been retained by the NYC Economic Development Corporation to lead the reconstruction of the 1,500 LF Brooklyn Bridge Esplanade on the East River waterfront in Lower Manhattan. Embodying the dynamic movement of the city, the waterfront edge serves as intersection of a complex network of paths, bringing together completed sections of the esplanade north and south, the inland neighborhood and the river—and overhead, the FDR Drive and Brooklyn Bridge. Starr Whitehouse’s design is informed by the City of New York’s 2005 master plan, the preferences of the surrounding community, and the increasing importance of flood mitigation. Resilience measures have been implemented throughout the site, which lies within the 100-year FEMA flood zone. A revitalized seaside thoroughfare, the finished project will minimizes pedestrian and cyclist conflicts, present ample space for social gatherings, and capitalize on wide views for quiet reflection.
