Starr Whitehouse was retained by the NYC Economic Development Corporation in 2018 to lead the redesign of the 1,500 LF Brooklyn Bridge Esplanade on the East River waterfront in Lower Manhattan. Embodying the dynamic movement of the city, the waterfront edge serves as intersection of a complex network of paths, bringing together completed sections of the esplanade north and south, the inland neighborhood and the river. The first phase of the redesign to be implemented is a universally-accessible, solid granite “Get Down” that grants New Yorkers access to a rare stretch of soft, sandy coastline on the Manhattan shore. Framed by views of the East River and the sweep of the Brooklyn Bridge directly overhead, the Get Down reclaims 207.5 linear feet of beach for New Yorkers of all ages and abilities. Upland of the access point, a newly-reconstructed piece of the East River Waterfront Esplanade Greenway connects the site to the surrounding community and fills in a critical piece of New York’s bicycle and pedestrian path network.
