The Alpha Loop is an urban multimodal trail system that will enhance connectivity and create a cohesive pedestrian experience in the rapidly-growing city of Alpharetta, GA. Amid a boom in new shops, cafes, hotels, offices, multi-family residences, and mixed-use lifestyle centers, the Alpha Loop represents the City’s commitment to an interconnected and sustainable urban realm at human scale. Teaming with Columbia Engineers, Starr Whitehouse was engaged to develop a trail study and conceptual design report for the downtown portion of the Alpha Loop system. The study creates a district-wide framework for the Downtown Link, establishing a dynamic and legible public realm experience that maximizes connections to open space, commercial and institutional attractions, and existing and future Alpha Loop segments. Safety is improved at three major intersections, while design alternatives propose a range of options for placemaking at two downtown focal areas—including a shared street option at Old Roswell Street.
