Don White Memorial Park is naturally stratified into two levels, allowing visitors to enjoy upland meadow lounging as well as lowland riverside adventure. This site is part of a new system of riverfront open spaces that Starr Whitehouse is designing for the City of Roswell, Georgia. Consisting of four parks whose separate ecologies, geologies and histories of use shape site-specific programs, the new system aims to increase access to the Chattahoochee for local families while also protecting and expanding native riverine habitats. On the upland layer of Don White, a verdant lawn invites picnicking and spirited family volleyball games. The existing parking lot will be moved to make circulation more intuitive, and expand leisure areas. On the lower level, a new ADA-accessible dock spirals from a grassy meadow to the Chattahoochee’s dynamic shore. The reconfigured launch will allow boats to leave from Don White, and dock at the Azalea site. This site, with its city-managed dock, as well as the three other parks in the new system, will contribute to Roswell’s vision to re-connect the community to the riverfront after many years of inaccessibility and industrial use.
