Part of a new residential development by The Durst Organization, Queens Plaza Park is a tightly-programmed pocket park built directly over subway lines and adjacent to the LIRR transit hub. Each area of the park is defined by a use and character, fitting together like puzzle pieces to make maximal use of a tight urban footprint. A welcoming entry plaza, verdant plantings, passive lawn, and terraced boardwalk seating offer places to relax, while play equipment, parkour beams, and adult fitness provide active recreation for all ages. A small dog park serves local dog owners and their pets, while porch swings and ping pong tables instill the park with the feel of a neighborhood backyard. An artist-designed universally-accessible play structure flows seamlessly with the topography, adding play and visual interest for local children. To protect the area from flooding, a bioretention basin absorbs stormwater, while surface bioswales make visible the park’s green infrastructure systems for visitors and students of the nearby high school. Situated at grade, Queens Plaza Park is universally accessible to all members of the public, adding cultural, recreational, ecological, and social amenity to this rapidly-growing residential neighborhood.
