The landscape concept for PS-IS 342 is a response to the importance of social interaction and contact with nature on the developing mind. The different spaces provide variety, surprise and stimulation for their young users and allow for an educational experience in the schoolyard, blending the literal and the metaphorical. The site encompasses four play areas: on the fourth floor, a play cage, cave cube, and outdoor classroom; and on the second floor, a woodland playground. All spaces use a combination of plantings/natural materials and custom-designed play equipment to recreate a particular, interactive natural setting, half imagined, and half real. Schematized natural patterns are a recurring theme throughout the design, bringing to life tiled floors, painted ceilings, and glass windows. Occupying the base of a new residential building, the landscapes are all over-structure, creating a natural experience in a built environment.
