In 2001 Laura Starr, partner at Starr Whitehouse, led the initial international planning and design charette to create a vision for Park Ariel Sharon, promising to transform 2,000 acres of undeveloped land into a ‘Central Park’ serving Israel’s most populated urban area. Dominated by a 125 acre landfill mountain, Park Ariel Sharon reclaims lost land for natural systems, integrating innovative water management techniques. Starr Whitehouse collaborated on different aspects of the Park’s conceptual development, crafting a programmatic plan for the park, and using neighborhood and park user information to recommend the locations for playgrounds, visitor centers, and other park features. Starr Whitehouse also worked to establish the park philosophy and guidelines to ensure that Park Ariel Sharon will best serve its local, regional, and international visitors for generations to come. Further developed and implemented by Peter Latz, today the Park offers a range of landscapes and recreational opportunities, from a programmed urban edge to a wild interior, each responding to site-specific conditions.
