Mayor Announces $68 Million to Turn Prospect Park into a Floodwater Sponge

Starr Whitehouse is thrilled to be supporting Dewberry, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and Prospect Park Alliance to leverage Prospect Park as a floodwater sponge in Central Brooklyn. The team’s plan integrates the park into DEP’s BlueBelt program — using detention ponds, rain gardens, and bioswales to mitigate flooding in nearby residential neighborhoods. Last week, the Mayor’s Office announced $68 Million in funding to implement parts of the plan. “By using Prospect Park to manage stormwater,” said DEP commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala, “we’re turning one of Brooklyn’s most cherished public spaces into a powerful tool for climate resilience.”
