New York City
This project is a twelve story middle-income cooperative with a north-facing rear yard. Shifting squares create a textural journey through the courtyard’s different rooms as a counterpoint to the inherent shadiness of the space. Pergola entries create transitions from inside to outside, enhancing the sense of openness once out in the courtyard and acting as screens for the private terraces. The western portion is a bamboo garden, with built-in furniture that reduces the scale of the perimeter wall, and is a comfortable place to sit and drink or dine with friends. Creative up-lighting makes the courtyard an attractive, well-used space long into the warm summer evenings. The eastern portion of the space is a gravel pathway that leads through a gravel and boulder courtyard and into a quieter, meditative deck area. Stylish, intimate furniture make this space a retreat from the active end, and a place to find quietness and comfort.
