Green Roof
New York City
The restoration and conversion of this SoHo building includes a green roof to provide social space and contribute to the project’s environmental performance. Starr Whitehouse consulted to Cook + Fox architects to create, in a very short time, a roof garden that is simple, inexpensive and easy to construct and maintain.
The garden had to be light weight, yet provide paths, areas to sit in and year-round interest. The use of a modular tray system achieved all of these goals.
Playing with the strict geometry of the trays, the design creates a mosaic of colors and textures. Each tray is planted with one type of plant—sedums or perennials—chosen for its hardiness and year-round interest. Deeper trays allow for taller grasses along the roof parapet. The pavement shares the same modular dimensions as the planting trays, and interlocks with the planting to form the garden’s paths and terraces.
