East Coast Memorial

New York, NY

Working from a sketch, conceived collaboratively with the Battery Conservancy, the Park Department, and other landscape architects, Starr Whitehouse developed a proposal for the East Coast Memorial, the WWII monument at the center of the Battery Bosque. The design integrates the Memorial into the newly restored Bosque, through the use of the Bosque’s rich planting palette and soft surface, while maintaining its architectural integrity. Undulated evergreen hedges echo the strong lines of the eight 19 foot pylons that compose the monument and the formal, central space will be preserved to accommodate military ceremonies. Benches, replacing the existing balustrade, will offer a place of reflection while improving the visual connection to the Battery Lawn. This new design for the East Coast Memorial makes it more of itself, while knitting it into the surrounding Bosque.
