Remsen Avenue Yard Construction

In Brooklyn, when a water main breaks, a sewer collapses, or infrastructure needs ongoing repair, the crews of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are marshaled out from the obsolete Remsen Avenue Yard. The replacement facility satisfies complex operational needs and attains a level of sustainability emblematic of DEP’s environmental mission. Stephen Whitehouse led the landscape architecture and urban design effort for the multi-disciplinary project team led by Kiss + Cathcart Architects. An ambitious program of water conservation and capture of stormwater was given a visible expression through the introduction of a landscape swale to detain, infiltrate, and then filter any remaining water from the roof leaders before connecting to the sewer system. The landscape provides the public demonstration of stormwater Best Management Practices and contributes to the project’s environmental performance goals.
