Columbia University Faculty House
New York, NY
Sandwiched between two buildings, the entry to Columbia University’s Faculty House is a dark, tunnel-like space, overwhelmed by concrete staircases and ramps. Working with Bogdanow Architects, Starr Whitehouse developed a design to transform the interstitial space into a welcoming outdoor foyer. The new design, featuring a cascade of garden rooms, blends contemporary details with Columbia’s traditional vocabulary. Short sets of stone steps will alternate with broad landings, furnished with benches and paved with concrete and stone. Birch trees, shade plants, and a thick tangle of vines on the brick wall of the adjacent building will make this green retreat a magnificent opportunity for Faculty House events. |
