Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Rooftop Terrace and Green Roof
Brooklyn, NY
The new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Fisher Building will be a modern and flexible performing arts space, seamlessly integrated into the BAM cultural arts complex. In collaboration with H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture and Convert, Starr Whitehouse is designing a rooftop landscape to crown this new building, offering an outdoor venue for community gathering, special events/fundraisers, and educational endeavors. Semi-intensive gardens will feature sedums, grasses, woodland shrubs, and perennial plantings. Opaque glass paver lights will create an intimate atmosphere at night and illuminate the gardens in a gentle glow. A 16” vine planter will cover the bulkheads and span between them creating a sheltered area on the terrace below. The pre-cast concrete paving and plantings of the Rooftop Landscape will contribute to achieving LEED-Silver rating or higher.
