Riverside Park

New York, NY

To rehabilitate a once elegant stretch of Manhattan’s historic Riverside Park, which had suffered the erosion of its steep slopes, the dilapidation of park furniture and impeded access, Laura Starr and Stephen Whitehouse consolidated redundant paths into a single lane under mature trees, connecting it more efficiently with the city sidewalk and enlarging the green areas. The project also encompassed revitalizing the area around the community flower garden, re-establishing hexagonal blocks as the main pavement surface, installing new benches and rebuilding a 100-foot-tall stair and ramp ensemble that connects Riverside Drive with the riverfront Greenway and businesses below.
